Annie Kim and Ariana Saenz named WGCA US Fellows

HOUSTON – University of Houston female golfers Ariana Saenz and Annie-Kim were honored as Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholars for their impressive work in the classroom during the 2021-22 season.

It was the seventh time in the past eight seasons that at least one Cougar has been named a WGCA All-American scholar.

Kim and Saenz were among nearly 1,500 student-athletes to receive the award at all levels of NCAA athletics. The selection criteria for the All-American Scholar team are among the strictest, with all student-athletes earning a minimum GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Kim earned the first WGCA All-American Scholar of her career as a health major with a minor in biology.

Kim led the team with an average of 74.03 and 11 rounds of par or better, including a season-low team 67 in the second round at MountainView Collegiate on March 19.

The Seoul native earned five top-25 finishes with a season-best fourth-place finish at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., Oct. 4-6, 2021.

A two-time member of the American Athletic Conference’s All-Academic varsity team, Kim opened the U.S. Championships with an even par 72 and tied for 12e at 225 in his conference tournament debut. She was named to the All-American Athletic Conference team for the first time.

Kim will return to the Cougars in 2022-23 as a super senior.

Competing as a super-senior in 2021-22, the Porter, Texas native has played in 10 tournaments, posting nine rounds of par or better, including a low of 70 in The Bruzzy’s final round at the end of the spring season.

Saenz etched her name in Houston records after tying the school record with a 65 in the first round of the Let Them Play Classic on May 20, 2021. She joined All-American Leonie Harm as the only Cougars to shoot 65 or less.
