The Buffalo Bills are set to close the 2021 regular season (in 2022) against the New York Jets.
The game starts at 4:25, which is the first 4:00 p.m. time slot for a Bills home game since 2009, and it’s also a significant slot for the Bills in terms of playoff positioning.
The Bills win the AFC East with a victory today over the Jets. They also win the division if the New England Patriots lose to the Miami Dolphins.
Sadly, the Bills can’t get past the AFC Playoffs seeded 3, as the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos on Saturday to ensure they are placed in the top 2. Given that the Tennessee Titans already hold a tiebreaker against the Bills, that means the best Buffalo can do is seed three.
The Bills get the third seed if the Cleveland Browns beat the Cincinnati Bengals and the Bills beat the Jets. Buffalo can’t get the 5 seed unless they lose and the Chargers-Raiders game is tied, but can go down to 6 or 7 with a loss and victory for New England.
I know this is all very confusing, but the easiest thing to look for is a Bills win and a Patriots loss, as it guarantees the Bills at least one home playoff game this month.
The Bills hosted two playoff games last year as a seed 2, but those two games only had a few thousand inside Highmark Stadium. The previous season the Bills went on the road against Houston, and in 2017 the Bills went on the road against Jacksonville.
If the Bills win today against the New York Jets, they’ll stage their first full playoff game since Dec. 28, 1996 … that’s right, over 25 years ago.
The Bills quarterback for this game? Jim Kelly.
The Bills lost 30-27 to Cinderella history, the Jaguars, who reached the AFC title game.
It’s crazy to imagine that 1996 will be the Bills’ last home playoff game at full capacity. Next week’s (hopeful) home playoff game would be one for the ages. It would be so gratifying for the Bills fans, especially the Bills fans who are in their 20s and 30s who have never had the chance to experience such a playoff atmosphere at home.
No matter the cold or the potential snow / rain, Bills Mafia will take Highmark Stadium off its hinges next week, if they beat the Jets today or if the Patriots lose to the Dolphins.
